Accelerating Nature Action

The Scandinavian Textile Initiative for Nature Action (STICA+) is an accountability and leadership initiative supporting the apparel and textile industry in improving its nature-related performance across key areas such as biodiversity, water stewardship, and waste.

Through the STICA+ Company Nature Action Program, small to medium-sized (SME) apparel and textile brands and retailers are supported in setting credible targets, developing and implementing action plans, strengthening reporting, and engaging in collaborative projects and policy initiatives to drive industry-wide change.

How STICA+ Works

STICA+ is currently a robust learning forum where members work with experts to develop guidelines, set targets, develop action plans, track and report on progress, and advocate towards policymakers. Although there are currently no reporting requirements, the ambition in the coming years is to develop internationally credible reporting standards and mechanisms so that companies can demonstrate their accountability and leadership, while integrating nature action into the core of their business.

Similar to STICA, companies participate in topic-specific webinars, receive coaching, and establish working groups — all to accelerate their learning and ensure they turn it into action.

WHAT MEMBERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE STICA+ COMPANY NATURE Action Program
Rebecca Watkins, Global Sustainability Manager, Gina Tricot
“STICA+ is a unique platform for sharing knowledge and driving collective action. For us, addressing biodiversity, water, and waste is not optional – it’s essential to the future of our business and our planet. By joining STICA+, we look forward to gaining new insights, collaborating with others in the industry, and finding innovative ways to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable fashion future.”
Lina Ödeen, Head of Sustainability, Eton
“We believe collaboration is essential for progress, and STICA provides a strong platform for working together to reduce climate impact. To build on our efforts in areas such as biodiversity, water and waste, we have also joined STICA+, enabling us to engage with other industry leaders who share our commitment to protecting nature.”

Company Nature Action Program: 2026 Focus Areas

STICA+ supports members in addressing three critical environmental areas across their operations:

Focus Area 1:
Biodiversity
Company operations both depend on and impact ecosystems, and biodiversity loss poses significant risks to supply chains, resource availability, and long-term business resilience. As regulation and investor expectations evolve, protecting nature is becoming a core pillar of credible sustainability strategies.
Focus area 2:
Water
Water scarcity and pollution directly threaten operational continuity, supply chain stability, and community relations. As climate change intensifies water-related risks, responsible water management is essential for long-term resilience and regulatory compliance.
Focus area 3:
Waste
Addressing waste is increasingly critical as regulatory pressure, resource constraints, and demand for circularity grow. Reducing waste helps minimise environmental impact, lower costs, and support more sustainable business models.

Åsa Andersson, Sustainability Director, Helly Hansen
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved through STICA since its start in early 2019 – true collaboration at its best! With STICA+, we’re now expanding our focus to biodiversity, water and waste – critical issues closely linked to climate. I’m excited to help establish best practices for the Nordic textile sector. This work will be key to setting baselines, developing roadmaps, and aligning on targets and actions, driving meaningful impact while preparing us for upcoming reporting and compliance demands.”
Øystein Bråta, CEO, Active Brands
“Collaborating with industry peers through STICA has helped us move faster and more effectively on reducing our GHG emissions. With STICA+, we see the same opportunity to accelerate action on water, biodiversity, and waste—areas that are increasingly critical to both our business and our planet. Collective action is key to real impact, and we’re proud to be part of driving that forward.”
Cecily Rooney, Sustainability Manager, Axel Arigato
“In STICA+ we really enjoy exploring some of the more advanced areas of sustainability, focusing on increasingly important topics such as water, biodiversity, waste, and upcoming ESG legislation. The smaller-group format of STICA+ enables us to tackle these topics collaboratively – sharing ideas, learning from one another, and ensuring we don’t reinvent the wheel across our respective brands! We really value the chance to connect with fellow sustainability experts in these engaging workshops, and the insights gained have already made a significant impact on our internal sustainability strategy.”
Selma Jakobsson, Head of Sustainability & Quality, Peak Performance
“Biodiversity, water, and waste management are pivotal to our sustainability efforts and require increased focus. By joining STICA+, we can accelerate our initiatives in these areas through the STICA+ framework and support, collaborating with other dedicated brands on the same mission.”
Emma Häggström, Sustainability Director, Acne Studios
We’ve been part of STICA since the beginning, and it has been a valuable support in developing our climate strategy. Now, joining STICA+ to deepen our work on biodiversity, water, and waste feels both urgent and exciting. As a brand that uses primarily natural materials in our collection, biodiversity is a crucial topic for us — and so is water. Access to clean water and responsible water use are essential for both ecosystems and the making of our materials. We value STICA+’s diverse network as it brings together brands of all sizes and backgrounds to share knowledge, best practices, and practical support around upcoming legislation. We look forward to contributing our experience, learning from others across the industry, and working together toward ambitious, collective goals — just as we’ve done with STICA.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Ask us anything

If you have questions, we are here to help.

While STICA focuses solely on climate action, STICA+ takes a broader approach to nature action, covering biodiversity, water, and waste.

STICA requires signatories to meet rigorous standards, while STICA+ currently focuses on learning and development, with the ambition to create clear target-setting and reporting guidelines and structures, similar to STICA.

Participation in STICA is not required to join STICA+, but it is helpful.

Most of the STICA+ companies are members in other initiatives, such as Cascale, Textile Exchange, The Fashion Pact and EOG. When asked what makes STICA+ valuable, companies say that the structure makes it easier—particularly for small- to medium-sized (SME) brands and retailers—to actively engage, share challenges, and learn from peers facing similar realities. They also highlight that the STICA+ approach supports practical implementation, with a focus on translating knowledge into action. We highly recommend speaking with a member to hear their reasons for joining STICA+.

Each apparel and textile company’s nature action business case will look slightly different depending on products, sourcing base, and operations. However, at a broader level, nature action is increasingly important for business resilience, compliance, and long-term competitiveness.

Key areas include:

  • Resilience: Securing future access to key raw materials such as cotton, wool, and viscose in the context of climate change and ecosystem degradation.

  • Compliance: Preparing for evolving regulatory requirements, including mandatory EU reporting frameworks such as CSRD, and emerging legislation such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

  • Brand and reputational risk: Reducing exposure to risks linked to supply chains, including issues related to water depletion, pollution, and deforestation.

  • Operational efficiency: Improving resource efficiency, including reduced water use and lower chemical inputs in manufacturing processes, often resulting in cost savings.

Apparel and textile companies are increasingly expected to manage their impacts on biodiversity, water, and waste due to both EU legislation and global agreements. Key frameworks include:

  • European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS / CSRD, CSDDD): Require reporting on biodiversity, water, pollution, waste, and circularity in addition to climate.

  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): A global commitment to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

  • EU Chemicals, Water, and Waste Directives: Include requirements for responsible chemical use, wastewater management, and waste reduction.

  • EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR): A landmark law that prohibits products linked to deforestation or forest degradation from being placed on or exported from the EU market.

Participation in STICA+ helps companies prepare for compliance with these evolving regulations and integrate nature action into their business strategy.

STICA+ is designed for apparel and textile companies in Europe that want to take practical action on biodiversity, water, and waste. Companies of all sizes are welcome. Support is provided to ensure smaller companies can engage effectively, including access to tools, templates, and guidance.

The companies currently participating in STICA+ represent a broad range of segments and business models, from fashion and outdoor to workwear and home interiors, among others.

No, participation in STICA is not required to join STICA+. However, companies should demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability and understand that participation involves both developing their own goals and contributing to the initiative’s development. STICA+ is intended as a long-term commitment.
